Emmanuel Macron established, this Saturday, July 12, a national day of commemoration, on July 12, of the rehabilitation by the justice of Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer unjustly accused of the betrayal at the end of the 19th century, by asking that “always” remains vigilant “against the old demons” of itemitism.
“Now, every July 12, a commemoration ceremony for Dreyfus will be held for the victory of justice and truth against hatred and anti -Semitism,” writes the head of state in a statement published by Elysée.
The first ceremony will take place in 2026, for the 120th anniversary of the recognition of the Captain’s innocence Court.
Raised to the “general brigade” range
Last June, the deputies unanimously approved on Monday a bill of Gabriel Attal, “raising Alfred Dreyfus to the general brigade rank”, a “repair law” aimed at completing his rehabilitation, 130 years after his conviction.
In 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of betrayal and forced to exile on the island of the devil in Guyana, based on false accusations fed by the anti -Semitism very anchored in the French society of the late nineteenth century.

“Surveillance Test”
“Unfortunately, the paternity of the heirs of Anti -Depusardos, anti -republicans and anti -Semites from the beginning and mid -twentieth century has never calmed down,” writes the head of state. “We know that we must always prove surveillance and perseverance against these old anti -Semitic demons caused by hatred. And today more than ever,” he adds.
Between January and May 2025, 504 anti -Semitic acts were identified in France, according to the Ministry of Interior, a 24% drop for a year but a duplication compared to the same period in 2013.
