IVG: RN proposes to constitutionalize the Velo law

The RN has presented an amendment aimed at enshrining the Veil Law in the Constitution. Until now, the far-right formation had rejected this type of initiative. Although two texts that want to guarantee abortion will soon be examined, the party seeks to prevent the opposition from referring to its ambiguities on abortion.

Team change. The National Association (RN) will propose to constitutionalize the Velo law, now included in the Public Health Code, according to information from RTL, confirmed by France Info.

The group chaired by Marine Le Pen has presented an amendment to the bill that La France Insoumise (LFI) intends to present in the chamber this Thursday during its parliamentary niche to include the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in the Constitution. Until now, Marine Le Pen had rejected any initiative in this regard. In an interview granted to JDD on November 13, he said the following:

“We are not the United States. No political party in France is calling for the abolition of this right. I do not immediately understand what danger this request for constitutionalization must respond to.”

The RN deputy for the Somme Jean-Philippe Tanguy explained to France Info that it is about “protecting the law as it exists today and not constitutionalizing a very vague principle that could open up new perspectives”.

“Genocide”

The elected member of the extreme right thus believes that the rebels – but also the macronistas, who will present a bill similar to that of the LFI – could “guarantee the right to abortion without conditions and without delay” with their text.

An RN heavyweight tells RTL that the move is aimed at avoiding the “political trap that hung in our faces.” That of being referred to the ambiguities of the party to the flame. Marine Le Pen, for example, had mentioned during her 2012 presidential campaign a “comfort abortion” that she wanted to reimburse.

Several eminent personalities from the far-right formation have distinguished themselves in the past for their anti-abortion positions. One thinks, for example, of Caroline Parmentier, Marine Le Pen’s press officer, who became a deputy for Pas-de-Calais during the last legislative elections.

“After having ‘genocidated’ French children at the rate of 200,000 a year, we must now replace them with all our might with immigrants,” she declared in 2018. She was then editor of the traditionalist Catholic newspaper Presente, classified in the extreme Correct.

In France Info, Jean-Philippe Tanguy stressed “that Marine Le Pen never considered questioning the right to abortion.” According to him, the reform of the RN “allows closing these false complaints and […] propose an agreed solution.
