“He is weakening a local balance”: the mayor of Arles opposes the abolition of Easter Monday and May 8 as vacation

On Easter Monday and May 8, threatened to be suppressed, they represent for Arles “outstanding social cohesion, cultural life and economic development”, estimates the mayor of the commune that requires “adopting a structural reform of public policies.”

A proposal that “deeply questions” in Arles. In a press release, the mayor of the commune, Patrick de Carolis, denounced the words of Prime Minister François Bayrou about his desire to suppress two vacations, citing “as an example of” Easter Mondra “and” 8-May. “

“This proposal, although it is part of a desire to respond to the country’s economic challenges, questions deeply,” wrote the mayor of Arles.

For the councilor, the abolition of this vacation raises in particular a problem at the level of the city calendar, which is above all structured “around these prolonged weekends, it becomes prominent aspects of social cohesion, cultural life and economic development.”

The mayor calls “to adopt a structural reform of policies”

Like Easter Monday, described as “a prominent point” and “a central event” for the identity, attraction and local economy of the city, as well as for “Los Feria” organized in this commune of 51,243 inhabitants. “Eliminate them is to weaken a local balance built for years,” Patrick de Carolis deplored.

The same story for May 8: “He carries a national memory in him, a republican heritage that we must continue honoring,” he said.

This elimination of Easter Monday and May 8, which would bring the number of holidays in France, would be added to the conversion since 2004 of Pentecost on Monday to the “Solidarity Day”.

“We must master public spending, but not at the expense of our history, our values, nor the vitality of our territories,” insurgated the councilor.

The mayor of Arles also called to “adopt a structural reform of public policies that no longer work”, instead “of ad hoc measures, such as the abolition of holidays.”
