Emmanuel Macron announces this Thursday, July 24 that “France will recognize the state of Palestine” during a speech in September. The President of the Republic “will make the solemn announcement at the United Nations General Assembly, next September.”
Through a message on his social networks, Emmanuel Macron explains that “peace is possible” in Gaza, reiterating his call to “a high fire, the liberation of all hostages and mass humanitarian aid.”
“Finally, we must build the state of Palestine”
For the tenant of Elysée, “we must guarantee the demilitarization of Hamas, safe and rebuild Gaza.”
“Finally, we must build the state of Palestine, guarantee its viability and allow to accept its demilitarization and by completely recognizing Israel, participate in everyone’s security in the Middle East,” specifies the head of state.
Emmanuel Macron has mentioned this recognition of Palestine by France several times in recent months. For example, when returning from a trip to Egypt last April, Emmanuel Macron had announced that France could recognize a Palestinian state “in June” on the occasion of a conference that will coincide with Saudi Arabia in New York. A conference that was finally postponed due to the war between Israel and Iran.
Emmanuel Macron’s announcement occurs when Israel faces an increasing international pressure to end the suffering of the more than 2 million inhabitants of the Palestinian territory, subject to a block that deprives them of vital humanitarian aid. A total blocking imposed in March by Israel in Gaza and very partially relaxed at the end of May led to a serious shortage of food, medicines and fuel.
147 of the 193 countries recognize the state of Palestine. In May 2024, Spain, Ireland and Norway formalized this approach, which brought the European Union to 10 that granted recognition. Before these countries, Bulgaria, Chipre, Malta, Hungary, Poland, Sweden and Romania had already recognized the state of Palestine.
