“Those who are absent are always wrong”: Macron rebukes the opposition after his boycott of the CNR

The president does not appreciate the absence of his opponents at the launch of the National Refoundation Council. “The door will always be open for them”, assured, however, the head of state.

Send the message to your opponents. Amid the launch of the National Council for Refoundation, seen by Emmanuel Macron as “a democratic innovation”, the president sent a message to the political parties, who as a whole refused to participate in the event.

“When we are not there, we cannot say that we have not been consulted or that we are too vertical. Those who are absent are always wrong”, judged the president when presenting the creation of this new body of reflection.

“The door will always be open for them”

The president of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, also refused to participate, as did the CGT and FO. The associations of elected officials, who had initially said no, backed down and are finally present. However, eager to get closer to his political opponents, Emmanuel Macron wants to give them a chance to change their minds.

“The door will always be open for them. Those who have chosen not to come, I hope they will come,” said the head of state.

The oppositions have put forward various arguments to explain their boycott, from the fear of circumventing Parliament, as Gérard Larcher suggested, to the denial of the Elysée Palace’s “com coup” to environmentalists. The presidential majority itself is also skeptical. Édouard Philippe, for example, preferred a trip to Quebec to the CNR.
