Invective, “threats”… Tense session in the Assembly on the reinsertion of unvaccinated caregivers

A minority in the chamber, the presidential party prolonged the debates in the Assembly to prevent the vote of a bill by the deputies of the LFI. This gave rise to numerous in-session incidents and points of order.

A form of parliamentary obstruction that aroused the ire of La France insoumise, the National Rally and many elected officials this Thursday night in the National Assembly. Lost in the reintegration of unvaccinated caregivers, the subject of an LFI bill, the presidential party and its allies prolonged the debates to prevent a vote on this text.

As part of the parliamentary niche of rebel deputies, the bill had to be approved at midnight, the latest deadline. Otherwise, the text was simply dropped. To prevent its adoption, Renaissance first tried to pass an amendment to remove the main article from the bill. But it was overwhelmingly rejected (96 in favor, 161 against).

“You’re going to shut up”

In a minority, the deputies of the presidential field decided, therefore, at the last moment, to multiply the editorial subamendments on a governmental amendment. Obviously, gain speaking time to prevent the text from being voted on.

One of the subamendments proposed, for example, to replace the words “n’exerquant” with the words “qui n’exerçent”.

Dozens of such amendments have been tabled. The Macronista deputies also requested numerous postponements, and the Minister of Health, François Braun, multiplied the speeches in Rio.

Behavior that has angered many elected officials on social media. Before he ends up crushing one of them, the deputy from Guadalupe Olivier Serva (LIOT), who yelled at one of his colleagues: “You’re going to shut up!”

“You reject democracy, you despise the people”

Despite the call for decorum by the vice-president of the National Assembly, Naïma Moutchou, several elected officials abroad supported Olivier Serva. The latter took the floor after a suspension of the session:

“You reject democracy, you despise an LFI parliamentary niche, you despise the people,” he said. “You use little subterfuges, like your ideals. […] You’re in the minority, accept it!”

“You cannot sit tomorrow, noon and night in democracy”, Sébastien Chenu (RN) abounded a few minutes before. “You can’t win by maneuvering.”

Earlier in the evening, several Renaissance deputies made comments that drew the ire of the floor. Caroline Yadan, for example, denounced: “the irresponsibility of the unvaccinated should not become ours.”

“You are in the process of making a conspiratorial anti-vaccine bill,” launched Sylvain Maillard.

“Here is not a circus”

After numerous motions of order and suspensions of the session, the rapporteur for the text, Caroline Fiat, denounced in a fiery speech the attitude of the Government, which was participating “in the game of obstruction”.

“We won’t let you go,” he concluded. His fellow rebels cheered widely and chanted “resistance.” The president of the session then intervened: “This is not a circus!”

A few seconds later, the speech by Olivier Véran, former Minister of Health and current government spokesman, for ten minutes, did not fail to electrify the debates a little more. And to cause another suspension of the session.

“Threats” would have been made against deputies of the majority, even stated in the chamber Thomas Mesnier (Horizons).

When the session resumed at 11:50 p.m., the opposition deputies decided to leave the chamber in protest. Just before midnight, the session chair closed the session and discussion of the text was interrupted. But many elected officials remain determined to vote to reinstate unvaccinated caregivers. “We will not give up, we will make sure that this text returns,” promised Caroline Fiat.
