The Socialist Party is “ready” to govern. Questioned by France Info about the hypothesis of his appointment in Matignon, Olivier Faure declared on Wednesday, October 8 that “all eventualities were on the table” and that any person on the left “would be welcome” to “allow changes.”
Aware that “he cannot behave as if we had an absolute majority” in the National Assembly, the first secretary of the Socialist Party is not “closed to the idea of progressively reaching commitments” in the hemicycle.
On the other hand, he closed the door to “a mixture of genres with a government that would mix people from the left and right.” After their informal meeting with Gabriel Attal and Marine Tondelier on Monday, Olivier Faure reiterated his opposition to a “common platform” with the central block.
He secured it on Wednesday in France Info: the Socialist Party “is not in the same field” as Sébastien Lecornu.
“Change the course”
According to him, however, there is “a single issue that must be discussed”: the Ministry of the Armed Forces and that of Foreign Affairs, “which are domain shared with the Head of State.” “There it would not be illegitimate for a continuation of those who are in power,” said Sébastien Lecornu and Jean-Noël Barrot.
“We need the management to change and that the policy followed by the government ceases to be the one that has been followed for eight years,” insisted Olivier Faure, adding: “From this point of view, it is necessary to alternate so that things really advance.”
Olivier Faure is, however, “against any form of confusion.” “I am willing to discuss why I am a Republican and because at a time when nobody has a majority, we must be able to advance,” explains France Info. While the PS intends to govern, it considers “on a certain number of issues that there is a majority of project” in the National Assembly.
The socialist leaders will meet on Wednesday with the resigned prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu, during which they will want to “verify” that the suspension of pension reform, which would be “an important gesture and a step forward for employees”, is not “a smoke curtain.”
