Pierre-Henri Carbonnel, UDR candidate supported by RN, wins the partial legislative elections in Tarn-et-Garonne

Voters in the first constituency of Tarn-et-Garonne elected Pierre-Henri Carbonnel as a new deputy on Sunday, October 12, during a legislative by-election.

Voters in the first constituency of Tarn-et-Garonne elected on Sunday, during a partial legislative election, the candidate of the UDR, Éric Ciotti’s party (RN ally), Pierre-Henri Carbonnel, instead of a socialist, following the call of the head of LR, Bruno Retailleau, not to give “any voice” to the left.

With this victory, obtained with 52.2% of the votes, according to non-final results provided by the prefecture, the Union of Rights for the Republic (UDR), a party founded by Eric Ciotti after his departure from LR during the early legislative elections of 2024, retains the seat of Brigitte Barèges, of which Pierre-Henri Carbonnel was a deputy.

Brigitte Barèges, former mayor of Montauban, had to resign in July after being declared ineligible by the Constitutional Council due to irregularities in campaign financing.

Assembly without changes

“Magnificent victory,” greeted Eric Ciotti in X, who sees in this result “the arrival of the union of the right to the country.” “Congratulations to Pierre-Henri Carbonnel, candidate of Éric Ciotti and the RN-UDR alliance who this afternoon defeated the socialist candidate, supported by the Macronists and the LFI in the partial legislative elections of Tarn-et-Garonne,” Marine Le Pen also greeted.

This partial vote, which leaves the political panorama in the National Assembly unchanged, illustrates the threat hanging over the republican front, embodied by Retailleau’s position and the transfer to Carbonnel of a part of the voters of the LR candidate, Bernard Pécou, who had obtained 17.55% of the votes in the first round, on October 5.

Although he did not give voting instructions to his followers, Pécou criticized the “drift of ideas” of Brigitte Barèges, who won the constituency against the left in 2024 following Ciotti in his alliance with the RN.
