Senator Claude Malhuret believes that “the Zucman tax is to growth what hydroxychloroquine was to Covid”

Just after Sébastien Lecornu’s political speech in the Senate, focused especially on the question of the budget, the senator from Allier was incisive towards the left when addressing the Zucman tax, the eternal sea serpent of the Government.

Known for his interventions, Allier’s senator, Claude Malhuret, attacked the Zucman tax this Wednesday, October 15, before the National Assembly, believing that this tax aims to “make growth what hydroxychloroquine was for Covid.”

“It is not in their proposals, but they know well that, in the absence of 49.3, it runs the risk of being in the final text,” says this former Secretary of State in charge of Human Rights during the government of Jacques Chirac.

This statement comes just after Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s speech in the Senate on the budget. The Prime Minister announced, in particular, that he would not use article 49.3 of the Constitution, which would allow the Government to adopt a text without a vote by deputies. An election that greatly upset the senator.

A tax “to finish us off”

Throughout his speech, Claude Malhuret attacked the economic ideas of “the French left (which) proposes to us, as if the country were the only one in the world, to work less, lower the retirement age, increase taxes and worsen the debt, France needs exactly the opposite.”

For the latter, the Zucman tax is a measure “to finish us off” that “will make all emerging technology and innovation companies flee.”

Zucman Tax: Should we tax the rich in France or not?

The taxation of holding companies, one of the measures proposed on Tuesday by Sébastien Lecornu to avoid censorship, with the suspension of the pension reform, is already under fire from critics from the left, who regret that the Zucman tax has been emptied of substance.

Increasing taxes on the richest was one of the government’s promises to guarantee the pardon of the socialists and try to avoid a premature fall. The left’s demand for a greater contribution from the wealthy has crystallized in recent weeks around the implementation of the Zucman tax, named after the economist who theorized and popularized it, Gabriel Zucman.

But it is another path that Sébastien Lecornu finally chose. It proposes taxing certain holding companies, companies that own shares in other companies, at 2%.
