The pill to suspend the pension reform does not pass through the presidential deputies of the Renaissance party. According to our information, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, wanted to gather, this Thursday, October 16, 11 of them at the Elysée Palace to talk about “retirement”, in the presence of the main figures of the macronie during its adoption in 2023: the former Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne and the former Minister of Labor Olivier Dussopt.
Gabriel Attal, president of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly, travels to Strasbourg. A trip “planned for a long time, until Saturday,” relatives told BFMTV.
This meeting comes after the commotion caused by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s announcement to suspend the reform. Emmanuel Macron, in front of deputies sometimes surprised by this choice, wanted to “informally return to the political sequence and explain his choices”, listening to the opinions of “each other”, according to our sources.
“The project that will have to be defended in 2027 is retirement with points”
“The Prime Minister has the freedom and responsibility of his commitments. It is painful for all of us. I know what this suspension costs them, what it also cost them to defend this reform, the threats at times, the violence. This fight was fair. But this commitment was necessary to allow stability,” he explained to the executives present and the deputies, as corroborated by BFMTV sources.
However, the presidential speech does not seem sufficient to alleviate all tensions. According to our information, some deputies present during this meeting at the Elysée indicated that they would refuse to vote on the amendment that ratifies the suspension of the reform. Several claim to have “a lot of negative comments on the ground about those who are trying to weaken the presidential office,” according to corroborating sources on BFMTV.
A commitment to avoid censorship
The suspension of the reform was one of the conditions imposed by the Socialist Party, through its first secretary Olivier Faure, for not voting on the motion of censure presented by La Francia Insumisa that same day.
A crucial decision: the motion was not adopted, 18 votes short of the absolute majority (289 votes), despite the support of seven rebel deputies from the majority.
The Socialist Party, however, warned that it reserves the right to censure the government in the future if the final text of the finance bill for 2026 does not respect the commitments made by Sébastien Lecornu.
