The former mayor of Levallois-Perret Patrick Balkany, convicted of tax fraud and aggravated money laundering in 2020 and currently demanding the lifting of his disqualification, intends to present a list for the 2026 municipal elections anyway, he stated on Monday, October 20 on RTL.
“I went to the court of appeal” in Paris to request the lifting of the disqualification sentence and “I have the answer to my request on November 5,” recalled the former mayor of Levallois-Perret, a wealthy city northwest of Paris.
“If it rises I will present myself to the city council and if it does not rise I will present a list,” he adds.
Definitely found guilty
Patrick Balkany and his wife Isabelle were finally found guilty in 2020 and then in 2021 of tax fraud and aggravated money laundering for having hidden, between 2007 and 2014, some €13 million in assets from the tax authorities, including two sumptuous villas in the Caribbean and in Morocco.
After several procedural twists and turns, Patrick Balkany was finally sentenced to four and a half years in prison, as well as a fine of 100,000 euros and an additional 10 years of ineligibility.
However, he was removed from office, as was his wife, in March 2020, because the penalty of ineligibility was accompanied by immediate execution.
The former baron of Hauts-de-Seine, who already spent five months in prison in 2019-2020, was imprisoned again for six months, from February to August 2022, for not having respected the limitations of his electronic bracelet.
