Emmanuel Macron considers “legitimate” the debate on the provisional execution of sentences after the imprisonment of Nicolas Sarkozy

Asked about the imprisonment of Nicolas Sarkozy, Emmanuel Macron estimated, this Tuesday, October 21 from Slovenia, that the debate on the provisional execution of sentences in France is “legitimate in a democracy.” The current head of state refused to comment in detail on the court decision against the former president.

The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, spoke this Tuesday, October 21, from Slovenia, where he is, about the imprisonment of former head of state Nicolas Sarkozy early in the morning.

In particular, he returned to the question of the provisional execution of Nicolas Sarkozy’s sentence, evoking a “decision of justice” that could “give rise to comments” and “the legitimate emotion of loved ones and part of the country.”

“I think it is a legitimate debate in a democracy, because everyone wants there to be avenues of appeal and recourse,” added the Head of State, specifying that this “debate” must “take place calmly and independently of specific cases.”

Emmanuel Macron also stressed the importance of a development of justice in “serenity”.

Nicolas Sarkozy was imprisoned in the sanitary prison around ten in the morning this Tuesday, a few weeks after his sentence to five years in prison in the case of Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign.

Earlier, his family and supporters had gathered in front of his house, some of them brandishing signs on which messages of encouragement were written.
