For once, the Socialist Party and La Francia Insumisa seem to be in agreement this Tuesday, October 21, one day after the opening of budget debates in committee of the National Assembly. Not about the strategy to adopt against the government, a new topic of discord between them in recent weeks, but about the National Group.
Through the voice of the socialist first secretary, Olivier Faure, and the rebel deputy Éric Coquerel, the two left-wing parties target the extreme right party, accused of not supporting the most modest as it claims.
“The RN is never anything other than the extension of Macronism”
“The RN is seen as a party that defends widows and orphans, I see many women and men who consider that it is a potential support, that it is a party that will allow the working and middle classes to breathe,” begins Olivier Faure on RTL. “But the reality is that in the votes that took place in committee we can already realize that the RN is never anything other than the extension of Macronism.”
This concerns in particular the rejection in the Finance Committee of the Zucman tax on very high assets this Monday, permitted by the presidential camp, but also by the RN and its ally the UDR, a party chaired by Éric Ciotti. This measure, which has become a standard for the left, provides for paying a minimum tax of 2% on assets, including professionals, when they amount to at least 100 million euros.
“It is not explained how professional goods are not going to be taxed,” declared RN deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy on Monday, fearing that the measure would favor “a wave of deindustrialization.”
“A common foundation and RNs that get along”
This rejection of the Zucman tax is “proof that this year you have a common basis and the National Group that agree to reject all the tax justice measures that we propose”, accused Éric Coquerel on France 2.
The rebel, who is also president of the finance committee, emphasizes that this applies to other provisions, citing the “reestablishment of the ISF (wealth tax)” or “the fact of ending (the single tax)” on capital income “or at least increasing (its) ceiling.” Therefore, he regrets a form of “hardening” of tax justice.
The deputies of the finance commission will also meet this Tuesday and Wednesday to debate the “revenue” part of the state budget. The text will then be examined in the chamber of the National Assembly starting on Friday. Parliamentarians will start from the government’s initial copy and not from the commission’s. However, current debates provide an indication of the balance of power.
