The president of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella, estimated this Thursday, October 30, on the set of France 2 that the Zucman tax is “madness”, reaffirming his opposition to it and its lighter version.
“The project of the left and the project of Mr. Zucman is to transform France into Venezuela without oil and that is not my project,” said the latter.
Due to the determined opposition of the central bloc, the right and the RN, the Zucman tax has little chance of being approved, either in its initial form (a minimum tax of 2% on assets of more than 100 million euros) or modified (3% from 10 million euros, but excluding innovative and family businesses).
“It is a confiscatory tax”
“The Zucman tax, which is supported by an economist close to the left and the extreme left (…) consists of taxing economic projections,” Jordan Bardella also stated, estimating that “it is a confiscatory tax that will lead to the drain of brains and talents.”
For the president of the National Rally, this tax “will have dramatic consequences” for France. “We need our companies, we need our talents and we need wealth creators to stay in France.”
In this already tense context, the government raised its tone on Wednesday morning. “Tax justice has given way to tax overbidding,” warned Economy Minister Roland Lescure. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu expressed concern to senators about a disconnect between the tax debate and “the general and global economic issue.”
In its sights is Tuesday’s vote by an alliance of the left and the RN in favor of a “universal tax” on multinationals, to fight against tax evasion and optimization.
“There is still work to do”
Marine Le Pen, singled out by the right for her support, defended the measure. “It’s just about enforcing the law,” he said. “At the moment, what was voted” in the Assembly within the framework of the examination of the state budget “is not shameful, contrary to the government’s cries,” insisted the head of the RN deputies.
But the warnings from the government sector did not stop the momentum of the deputies, on the contrary. Therefore, the government could still table a compromise amendment during the debates. “There is still work,” admitted government spokesperson Maud Bregeon.
