Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak announced in a tweet this Thursday morning having tested positive for Covid-19. “I isolate myself to protect others and continue to perform my duties from a distance,” he wrote.
Rima Abdul Malak is currently part of the official French delegation, which includes about 50 personalities, to support Emmanuel Macron during his three-day state visit to the United States.
A state visit for cultural purposes
The stakes of the French president’s stay on US soil are numerous: space conquest, climate policies, war in Ukraine or even emerging friction around US protectionism in terms of energy transition.
This visit is also intended to be cultural, hence the presence of Rima Abdul Malak within the delegation, which also includes various representatives of the world of French culture such as the dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied, the writer Douglas Kennedy, the president-director of the Louvre Laurence des Cars, or the director Claude Lelouch.
This Friday, the delegation travels to New Orleans, Louisiana, for a day dedicated to sports and music in particular. During this trip, Emmanuel Macron will have to formalize the creation of a Fund for the French language, in order to strengthen its learning in American schools.
