CFDT and CGT ready to mobilize in January if the Government maintains its pension reform

The two main unions in France, but also FO, CFE-CGC, CFTC, Unsa, Solidaires and FSU, will mobilize with “strikes and demonstrations” against the pension reform.

The unions warned on Monday night that they would decide on a “first date of unitary mobilization with strikes and demonstrations in January, if the government continues to support its pension reform project.”

The CFDT, CGT, FO, CFE-CGC, CFTC, Unsa, Solidaires and FSU unions have reaffirmed their opposition to “any extension of the legal retirement age as well as any increase in the contribution period”, in a press release issued following a meeting at the FSU headquarters in Les Lilas, near Paris.

“Youth, already strongly affected by precariousness, would be strongly impacted by this project”, adds this text also signed by five student movements (Unef, Fage) and high school students (VL, Fidl, MNL).

“The distribution system is not in danger”

The reform should be presented around December 15. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne reiterated last week her intention to delay the retirement age, on the grounds of guaranteeing the balance of the system.

Emmanuel Macron’s initial proposal was to gradually push the retirement age back to 65, but he has since said he is “open” to a postponement to 64 with an extension of the contribution period.

“The unions and youth organizations have already decided to meet again on the same day as the Government’s announcements,” warn the unions and youth movements, who believe that “the distribution is not in danger” next the financial plan

Various mobilization dates

These organizations “reaffirm their determination to build mobilizations together, particularly through a first date of unitary mobilization with strikes and demonstrations in January, if the government continues to support its project.”

“We set a date this afternoon for the fact that we oppose together at the age of 65, if the government confirms it,” Yvan Ricordeau, national secretary of the CFDT, told the press.

“There will necessarily be a first date on which the reform is officially announced, in January. And then there will be other dates, which will be built so that the workers (…) oppose the age of 65” and “that these provisions be eliminated from the bill”, added “Mr. Pensions” of the first French union.
