When it comes to immigration, France must “say who we want” to welcome and “who we don’t want” to welcome, Elisabeth Borne said on Tuesday when opening a debate on immigration in the National Assembly. “France is and will continue to be faithful to its tradition of asylum, but it is legitimate to raise the question of our migration policy: to say who we want, who we can welcome, and who we do not want, who we cannot welcome.” said the prime minister.
“Zero immigration is neither desirable nor possible, it is no more realistic than unregulated immigration,” he added, reaffirming his desire for “firmness” and “humanity” on the matter. “Seeking effective measures, wanting a regulated, controlled immigration, does not lack firmness or humanity,” he also said.
Elisabeth Borne wants to “speed up deportation proceedings”
“And before the extreme right tries a new manipulation, I repeat: in no way is it about a massive regularization”, “it’s about regularizing certain people”, the head of government specified. It is necessary to “accelerate (the) procedures” to “make those who must leave faster,” added Elisabeth Borne, promising to be “intractable” with foreigners in default, even in a regular situation.”
“Now it must be possible to take expulsion measures against foreigners who commit serious offences, whatever their situation,” he explained. The second objective is “to better welcome those who remain.” “The issue of regularization can arise for people in an irregular situation, present on our land for several years, and who have worked for a long time”, he developed.
