PS wants CML to reassess maintenance plans and strengthen flood mitigation resources

The PS will soon present a proposal to the Lisbon Chamber in a city council meeting to “reassess the maintenance plans for the main infrastructures and collectors” and the “possible adaptation of human resources” to flooding in the capital.

According to a statement from the Socialist councilors, the proposal to the Lisbon City Council (CML) to reassess the maintenance plans for the main infrastructures and collectors, foresees the participation of the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC), at a time when the current climate reality affects “the whole city” of Lisbon and “not just the river area”.

The PS recognizes that the Drainage Plan will structurally adapt the city of Lisbon to the climate changes experienced, but warns that this in itself “does not guarantee that flooding will not occur in extreme events” such as those from Friday to night, so Lisbon “must also adapt in terms of the response capacity of the road tunnel pumping mechanisms and the maintenance and preparation of the city’s key infrastructure”.

“Now is the time to repair the damage. And in this sense, given that more than two months ago the CML approved a plan of measures to combat the social effects of inflation, including 12 million euros to support traders , and not even one penny has reached the people and the company, the point is that the CML does what it promises,” say the socialist councilors.

To this end – they claim – the mayor, Carlos Moedas (PSD), must bring to one of the two parliamentary meetings next week (December 12 and 14) “an emergency plan for immediate support to people and traders who have suffered serious material damage.” flood damage”.

Incidentally, they recall that the precipitation that fell on Friday over the Greater Lisbon area recorded almost a third of the average precipitation values for the month of December in a few hours, in an “abnormal phenomenon but whose frequency, with worsening of the climate change, will return more and more”.

Meanwhile, also in a statement, after the floods, the PAN came to express its “solidarity” with all the people affected by this “extreme phenomenon”, thanking all the professionals involved in rescue operations and who they are still working to save the city make it “normal” again.

PAN also extends its condolences to the family of the woman who died in Algés on Friday.

“If doubts remain with regard to climate change, this was unfortunately yet another proof that we need to be prepared for these types of extreme events, which will become more frequent and more intense. The Drainage Plan cannot be the only solution, a holistic plan is needed for the problem. The new construction should not make the soil even more impermeable, it is necessary to create more greenery, support constructive solutions with rainwater collection and use systems,” defended the PAN, through the voice of the municipality deputy António Morgado Valente.
