Manuel Pizarro is the new holder of the Health portfolio, it was announced on the website of the Presidency of the Republic.
According to the note published “following the Prime Minister’s proposal, the President of the Republic will swear in the new Minister of Health, Dr. Manuel Francisco Pizarro de Sampaio e Castro, tomorrow at 6 p.m.” at the Palácio de Belém.

With a degree in medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, the new Minister of Health is a specialist in internal medicine, who participated in the creation of the Intermediate Medical Care Unit in Hospital de S. João, of which he was deputy coordinator.
In 2005, at the same time as he took up the role of councilor in the Porto City Council, he became Elected by PS as Deputy in the Assembly of the Republic through the constituency of Porto – where he grew up, despite his birth in Coimbra. In parliament he was a member of the parliamentary health committee.
In 2008 he took on the role of State Secretary for Health. and, in the second government of José Sócrates, as Deputy Secretary of State and Health.
A top figure in the PS in the north, he has chaired the Political Commission Concelhia do PS Porto and is president of the District Federation of Porto, a position he has held since March 2016.
The appointment of the new portfolio holder marks the departure of Marta Temido, who has been in charge of the Ministry of Health since October 2018. resigned at the end of August. Despite this, he remained in office until the new executive leadership of the National Health Service (SNS) passed a decree that was to go to the council of ministers on September 15, but was eventually brought forward to last Thursday.
