Laughter and yellow laughter. This Sunday in the National Assembly, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne shot a 49.3 ninth to approve the state budget. The President of the Government provoked laughter from the opposition and ironic applause from the rebel deputies.
“Why are you so afraid of the debate?” he launched from the rostrum of the National Assembly… while depriving parliamentarians of debate for the ninth time in fifty days.
Article 49.3 of the Constitution allows the approval of a bill without the prior vote of the deputies. Its use leads to the immediate suspension of the debates.
“It’s a Nameless Shame”
Visibly surprised by this question, the opposition deputies ironically applauded the Prime Minister… and he laughed.
“We had to dare. Dare to reproach, in the same sentence, the opposition for doing its democratic job by proposing other ways… and saying that this means rejecting the debate… while the President of the Government raises another 49.3. The straw, the beam”, denounces the deputy of the EELV Sandra Regol.
His rebel colleague Sarah Legrain also underlines the prime minister’s “bad faith” “to our bitter applause.”
“Such a performance before deciding on a new 49.3 deserves an Oscar. Congratulations to the artist!” declared the new coordinator of the rebel France, Manuel Bompard.
“The Prime Minister of France openly mocks the National Assembly. He is an unspeakable shame ”, also criticizes Jean-Philippe Tanguy (RN) from the other side of the chamber.
“Élisabeth Borne doesn’t even pretend anymore! This laughter that she can’t contain on the podium, in front of the national representation, is addressed to all of France. Pure cynicism, a shocking image that, I’m afraid, will not move anyone…” , wrote to him the deputy RN of Gard, Nicolas Meizonnet.
