Rounding the angles, but not with all. A few hours after the consultations between Elisabeth Borne and the parliamentary groups to debate the pension reform, Matignon makes a friendly assault.
The prime minister sent “a republican message” to Éric Ciotti on Sunday night, after his victory at the head of the republicans, according to information from BFMTV. The head of government did the same with Marine Tondelier, the new national secretary of Europe Ecology-The Greens, as well as Senator Hervé Marseille who took office this weekend at the helm of the UDI.
Give time to the new party leaders.
While Emmanuel Macron announced this Monday morning the postponement of the presentation of the pension reform to January 10, Elisabeth Borne wants to take advantage of this additional time to convince.
He was initially due to present the outlines of the extension of the retirement age to 65 on Thursday, after consulting again with the heads of the groups in the National Assembly and the Senate on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The agenda is therefore postponed, officially to allow “a few more weeks so that those (…) who have just assumed responsibilities can, on some key elements of the reform, discuss with the Government”, as justified by the Elysium.
No congratulations to Bompard
In a very tense social context, between the risk of power outages, price rises and strikes at the SNCF, the executive may also have wanted to avoid a hot social return in January.
The seduction operation, however, stops at the door of La France insoumise which “does not belong to the republican arch” as Élisabeth Borne had anticipated at the end of August. It is not therefore a matter of congratulating Manuel Bompard, who will be officially named coordinator of La France insoumise in the coming days, after a very eventful weekend within the movement.
“He’s a coordinator, not a party leader,” jokes a BFMTV executive adviser.
Opposition to the pension reform
Now it’s up to Matignon to take advantage of this extra time to convince widely. Elisabeth Borne, however, will have a lot to do as the opposition opposes pension reform.
It should go through a Social Security amending budget that could probably give rise to a new 49.3, in the absence of an absolute majority. Los Nupes and Agrupación Nacional have already announced the filing of a motion of censure. LR elected officials are also considering it.
