A measure that provoked a reaction in the opposition and that seems to divide public opinion. In fact, according to a new poll “L’Opinion en direct” conducted by the Elabe Institute for BFMTV, 53% of French people approve of the Head of State’s decision. By contrast, 23% “not really” and 23% “not at all” approve of the measure.
These results hide a division between football fans, who mostly approve of Emmanuel Macron’s decision (67%), and non-fans, who are more critical (57% do not).
The most well-supported boycott of cities
The political implications of this World Cup have repercussions in France. Thus, many cities have decided to “boycott” this contest, in particular by not installing giant screens, to denounce the organization conditions
A decision supported by 6 out of 10 French Football fans are divided: 50% approve, while non-fans are a clear majority to support the decision of these French cities.
In case of victory in the final, the majority of the French do not expect “a World Cup effect” on the cohesion of the country. If France were to become world champion again in a few days, 61% of French people think that it would not improve national cohesion in the country.
Soccer fans are a little more optimistic as 50% think that a third world title would be beneficial for national cohesion.
Survey carried out on a sample of 1010 people representative of the residents of metropolitan France aged 18 or over. The representativeness of the sample was ensured according to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex, age and profession of the interviewee, prior stratification by region and agglomeration category.
