PSD leader expresses solidarity with all affected

The leader of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, expressed a word of solidarity this Tuesday with all those facing the consequences of the bad weather that has hit the country.

“I want to send a word of solidarity to all mayors, all security forces and services, civil protection, firefighters and also to the population facing the consequences of this bad weather,” Luís Montenegro said after leaving a meeting with the Board of Directors of the Local Health Unit of Castelo Branco (ULSCB).

This Tuesday, the leader of the PSD started the third day of the “Sentir Portugal” program in the Castelo Branco district.

“It is a moment of great distress in some parts of the country and I cannot help but show solidarity with everyone facing this situation,” he stressed.

Luís Montenegro expressed his wish that “normality be restored as soon as possible”.

“Apparently, some of these cases lack structural measures that could more efficiently resolve the episodes of recent days,” he insisted.

The intense and persistent rain that fell at dawn this Tuesday caused hundreds of incidents, including flooding, falling trees and roadblocks in the districts of Lisbon, Setúbal and Portalegre, where several evacuees have been recorded.

In the Lisbon area, the weather imposed traffic restrictions on access to the city, prompting authorities to call on people to stay home where possible and to limit travel as much as possible.

In the district of Santarém, the rains increased the flow of the Tagus River, prompting the district civil protection commission to trigger the special emergency plan for flooding in the Tagus basin, given the “very significant” risk of flooding the riverbanks. The yellow alarm was activated in this hydrographic basin and in the Douro.

In Campo Maior, in the Portalegre district, the lower part of the village was flooded and several houses were flooded, some up to the ceiling, according to the city council, which plans to initiate the municipal civil protection emergency plan.
