Marcelo says the Portuguese can criticize the president and government, but value stability

The president of the republic believed on Wednesday that the Portuguese will “probably quietly to the family, at Christmas dinner” criticize him and the government for the difficulties they face, but try to adapt and appreciate stability.

At the Belém Palace in Lisbon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, during the government’s traditional ceremony of happy holidays, advised those in power “not to create additional problems in addition to those already existing in everyday life”.

According to the head of state, the Portuguese “understand why stability is important” in times like these and hope that no more “factors of instability” are added to those already existing.

“The Portuguese play it safe. And what does it mean to play it safe? It means he is probably short for the family at Christmas dinner, he will say a lot of bad things about the president and a little bad about the government, because of the lack of money , because of this, of health, the Minister of Health smiles there, but because of this, that, that other, he will say, but the fact is that in the meantime he has miraculously adapted his way of life “said.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa added that the Portuguese, “also with social help, but even without social help”, see how they can endure “this war situation” and its consequences.

PR emphasizes “prices of power” and asks to avoid “additional problems”.

The President of the Republic, in front of the Prime Minister and almost all government ministers, emphasized the “prizes of practicing politics” and asked to avoid “additional problems” to those already existing.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke at the Sala dos Ambassadors of the Palace of Belém, in Lisbon, during the traditional ceremony of the government’s happy holidays.

During his intervention, the head of state considered that the solutions found to face the current difficulties “are all precarious”, because the situation mainly depends on external factors.

“Nevertheless, we are all those who wield political power judged as if they depend only on us and it is very difficult to explain that this is not the case. It is part of arbitrariness, that is, of contingencies, that is, of prices, to make it clearer to the Portuguese what the price is of exercising political power”noted.

Before the Prime Minister, António Costa, and almost all the ministers of the XXIII Constitutional Government, the Head of State added: “That’s right, elections have this effect, it’s not just about accessing power and exercising what is beneficial to power – which, by the way, the one who exercises it finds out to be very little -, it pays the price of what is unfavorable in strength, and that is huge”🇧🇷

In his speech, the President of the Republic believed that the Portuguese understand “why stability is very important in these situations” and do not want more “crisis factors”. ‘We are not going to add instability factors’strengthens.

“By the way, I am amazed when I look at other countries, some of which are neighboring countries, and see the imagination with which they create additional problems beyond war, inflation and the other negative effects of war, many of which are social, on human lives”he added.
