CDS-PP defends the resignation of the new Secretary of State for Agriculture

The chairman of the CDS-PP, Nuno Melo, defended this Thursday the resignation of the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Carla Alves Pereira, who took office on Wednesday.

“After 11 replacements of rulers in nine months, after cases of criminal relevance, after rulers were accused and accused of serious crimes, after the President of the Republic warned the Prime Minister not to confuse an absolute majority with absolute arrogance and not to continue to act with a lack of transparency, Dr. António Costa has appointed in the position of Secretary of State for Agriculture someone who, as reported today, is targeted by the Public Prosecution Service for the existence of 700 thousand euros in bank accounts already in confiscated, the purpose of criminal proceedings in which the respective spouse is identified as an arguido,” emphasizes Nuno Melo.

In a statement, the leader and MEP of the CDS-PP “deems it untenable to keep the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Carla Alves, in office and therefore calls for her immediate resignation, or failing this, the decisive intervention of the President of the Republic”.

Nuno Melo emphasizes that the Ministry of Agriculture “manages the application of community funds and financial allocations worth many billions of euros, so the credibility of the respective holders must be above suspicion”.

“Absolute majority cannot be synonymous with impunity. Absolute majority does not legitimize a government to break through minimal ethical consensus, which is required of political representatives of the state,” defends the chairman of the CDS-PP.

Nuno Melo points out that “the CDS had said that the picture of government instability was doing everything it could to worsen”, and defends that “a few days were enough to confirm this prediction”.

Correio da Manhã reports this Wednesday that the new Secretary of State for Agriculture has seized bank accounts following an investigation involving her husband, Américo Pereira, a former mayor of Vinhais.
