These are some of the ideas embodied in a chapter on external strategy, accessed by the bureau Lusa, which appears in the global strategy motion with which Deputy and Leader Rui Rocha presents for the internal elections of IL on January 21 and 22 and which will be presented this afternoon in Porto.
By setting as his main objective “to remove the PS from the government and grow liberalism in Portugal”, the liberal candidate guarantees that he “knows the reforms the country needs” and that he has “the courage to carry them through while preserving the party and the country independent of any interests”.
“Unfortunately, we cannot say the same about other political agents who must be important to change the country. The President of the Republic has colluded with the downgrading of democratic institutions and has exercised his mandate by commenting on superficial issues and not acting on essential issues.”
Rui Rocha’s criticism does not end there and is also aimed at the PSD, which he accuses of having lost “its reformist energy” and “disliking many liberal ideas”, which amounts to “a loose opposition to the PS , which tries a simple alternation instead of an alternative, competing for seats in the State with the PS”.
“CH, PCP and BE represent the fascination with power as a means of crushing what they don’t like, appealing to people’s most superficial feelings and fomenting division and social conflict to win votes. They are extremist parties that intend are using the state to impose their worldview,” he adds.
With regard to the party’s objectives for the three elections that will take place during the term of the Liberal Executive Committee arising from the electoral convention, the candidate points to the ambition to have “liberal representation in all parliaments (Madeira, Azores, National and European), breaking with the two-party system and moving towards the 15% target desired for the next parliamentary elections”.
For example, Rui Rocha sets the target of one MEP and two regional MPs in each of the autonomous regions, ie in Madeira and the Azores.
“The Liberal initiative will be prepared for early elections, be it national or municipal elections, and for possible referenda,” he assures.
According to the motion, “in the event of early parliamentary elections, the Liberal Initiative will strive to expand the parliamentary group” – currently with eight deputies – who will be elected in any case in Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Setúbal and also in Leiria and Aveiro . “.
“The Liberal Initiative, as a rule, presents itself only for electoral acts, refusing pre-election coalitions. Any pre-election agreement must be validated by the party bodies through concrete analysis, especially in municipal elections, respecting the party’s principles” , anticipates.
Rui Rocha, Carla Castro and José Cardoso are in the race to succeed João Cotrim Figueiredo.
