The president of the republic is monitoring the health of the soldier hospitalized in Lisbon, the Palácio de Belém announced this Sunday in a note in which he added that the Commando trainee has already undergone a transplant.
“The President of the Republic, through the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, has been monitoring the health of the soldier of the commandos admitted to Curry Cabral Hospital. He notes the important fact that the transplant was performed this morning and expresses renewed best wishes,” announced the presidency of the republic.
The note was published on the official website of the Presidency after the Army General Staff ordered the interruption of the 138th command course on Saturday until the examination process of that training was determined, which involved hospitalization of two soldiers, one had to be a undergoing a liver transplant.
“By the determination of the Army Chief of Staff, the activities of the 138th Commando Course are suspended until the conclusions of the Investigative Process and the Extraordinary Technical Inspection of that military training action,” the Office of the Army Chief of Staff announced.
The soldier, who has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital de Curry Cabral, “remains in a stable situation, but with suspected liver failure”, so “the medical decision was made to proceed with liver transplantation, which would take place when she technical and logistical conditions have been met,” the same note stated on Saturday.
On Thursday, the military announced that two soldiers from the 138th Commando Course had been hospitalized on Wednesday after suffering cardiac arrest, and also revealed that an investigation procedure had been opened.
According to the army, a soldier taking this command course felt “unwell” on Wednesday afternoon during a “five-kilometer march” with the Serra da Carregueira Commando Regiment, in the Lisbon district.
The soldier was “quickly assisted” by two rescuers and an ambulance accompanying that activity and sent to the Command Regiment Health Unit.
“After evaluation, a change in the state of consciousness was detected, so CPR maneuvers were performed. […]INEM transported the soldier to São Francisco Xavier Hospital, where he will be hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit, monitored, anesthetized and ventilated, with a stable hemodynamic profile,” the note adds.
Later, around dinner time, another soldier felt unwell and was referred to the regiment’s health unit.
After being admitted to the health department for observation, he suffered “sudden interruption of cardiac and respiratory functions” but was resuscitated by on-site medical personnel.
However, he was eventually transported to Amadora-Sintra Hospital, “due to the need for further evaluation”, and he was “under observation” and in a “stable clinical condition”.
The remaining 44 instructors were evaluated by a health team, the military announced the initiation of an urgent investigation process and in the meantime it was decided to “significantly relieve the physical load and not conduct some sessions if necessary”.
This branch of the armed forces also opted for “permanent clinical observation of trainees”.
Case seems to be different from situation in 2016
Later, at the end of the Lisbon Book Fair, Marcelo returned to the theme and emphasized that the case of the soldiers interned in Lisbon appears to be “a very different situation” from what happened six years ago, when two young people died in an exercise.
“An investigation is underway, but it may happen that the situation is very different from the previous one,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during a visit to the Lisbon Book Fair today.
The Commando soldier was admitted to Curry Cabral Hospital on Saturday after undergoing surgery, a procedure that resulted in a liver transplant that “ended this morning” and “went well,” according to the President of the Republic, who is the highest-ranking Commander of the Republic. navy
Marcelo stressed that six years ago it was “much more dramatic” because there were deaths.
In addition, he added, it was now “a cardiovascular stop at mealtime that is different from exercise.”
Marcelo reiterated that the matter is under investigation and that we have to wait. “Let’s wait and see. Several hypotheses were put forward that, if verified, are different from the situation in 2016,” the president underlined.
