What the Executive is preparing for the energy crisis

Elisabeth Borne will announce this Wednesday the guidelines of the new energy tariff shield. Faced with rising gas and electricity prices, the French will have to do their part.

What are the prices of gas and electricity this winter? Elisabeth Borne will announce this Wednesday the guidelines of the new tariff shield. Commenting on the effects of the war in Ukraine, the Prime Minister confided her concern to BFMTV.

“We are also preparing to manage at the national level the consequences of a conflict that is protracted with the immediate effects that it may have for the French, in particular in energy matters,” he explains.

Bruno Le Maire, for his part, made no mystery: households will also have to take their share.

“When you have a price of electricity and gas that takes 110-150% in a few months, it would be completely irresponsible to load the burden of these increases solely on the State budget”, explained the Minister of Economy in LCI on Monday.

“Inflation Hell Loop”

Although the tariff shield is maintained for all households, Bruno Le Maire clarified that it will be a priority to target “those who would have difficulties paying this bill.” Understand: the most modest and the middle classes. For example, in gasoline, the aid will only affect the “big rollers”, those who most need their car to go to work. The same principle will apply to gas and electricity.

Objective for the Elysée: prevent an “inflation hell loop” from being triggered. To do this, the executive wants to soften the effect of the energy shock over time. For the Elysee, this sudden increase in energy is comparable to a tax from abroad. In the end, the citizens will have to pay.

The solution of a very generous tariff shield would weigh the debt on the taxpayers of tomorrow. However, according to the confidences of a minister to BFMTV, it is important that the Executive does not completely erase the rise in prices with public money, otherwise not all French people will be aware of the efforts that must be made in terms of sobriety. Emmanuel Macron sums up this balance: “There will be efforts to be made, not sacrifices but efforts.”
