Maria Manuel Cruz assumes the presidency of the Espinho City Council

“Following the resignation of the municipal mandate by Miguel Reis and following the procedures provided for by law, Councilor Maria Manuel Cruza will assume the presidency of Espinho City Council,” the document read.

The new president ranked third on the Socialist Party’s lists in the 2021 municipal elections and has so far exercised the responsibilities of education, culture, environment and administrative modernization, the document adds.

Álvaro Monteiro, number two on the list, who was vice president of the municipality on a temporary basis, also resigned from the mandate and did not assume the presidency of the municipality due to the impossibility of continuing his professional activity as a doctor and director of the Centro Hospitalar de Vila Nova Gaia/Espinho with these functions, explains the district authority of Porto.

Maria Manuel Cruz was born 63 years ago in Espinho and is a teacher of physics and chemistry, with more than 36 years of service in public schools, reads in the biographical note.

Miguel Reis revealed in a statement to Lusa today that he would resign his term as mayor of Espinho after being involved in a corruption investigation involving real estate interests.

“Following the steps taken in the context of the Vortex operation, I have taken the decision of my own free will to resign with immediate effect from the mandate for which I was elected in the Espinho City Council and, consequently, in the institutions where , for inherent functions, represented autarky. A resignation that extends to the functions he held in the different organizational levels of the Socialist Party,” the politician revealed.
