On other occasions, the doctor and former socialist leader challenged the militants of his party, for example at the end of the second day of the PS Academy. And a few days ago, at the launch of a book whose audience was not deprived of liberals, he again recalled “the lack of young people and women in Portugal” who occupy truly leading positions, namely politicians.
“Grey Portugal must make way for a young and feminine Portugal”, defended Álvaro Beleza. And the statement became a “campaign poster”, gasping the candidacy of Carla Castro, who is contesting the leadership of the Liberal Initiative (IL) this weekend with… two men (Rui Rocha and José Cardoso, whose profiles you can meet out of the way).
“Breaking new life into politics is perhaps the biggest challenge we have. And I believe that women have the unique ability to focus on the essentials while also having the caring instinct that we so desperately need,” reads the message posted on social networks has been published. candidate for leadership of the Liberal Initiative.
Next to the photo of Álvaro Beleza is another statement from the president of SEDES: “I hope that next Sunday there will be a female leader again and that the next prime minister will also be a female prime minister.”
Is Beauty’s outspoken support for Carla Castro’s candidacy? “My party is the PS and I don’t interfere in the lives of other political parties,” said the socialist militant, contacted by DN. Yet it confirms the statements that serve as a motto for the candidate. “The time has come for women to lead in business and politics. But lead seriously, in the front line. Quotas are not enough, there must be a greater presence of women at the head of parties, with decision-making power I really like that, we see that in the countries of Northern Europe, for example.”
It is not the first time that the militant of the most liberal wing of the PS has appeared on this party podium. During a meeting with young people from IL, in October, Álvaro Beauty was one of the guests and took part in the panel Liberalismo Fora de Portas, in which he debated with the also “external” Margarida Balseiro Lopes (PSD) and Cecília Meireles (CDS -PP). On that occasion, the President of SEDES took the opportunity to deplore the conservatism that still characterizes the country’s life and political expression, and encouraged more liberal thinking to help develop Portugal. “You are still going to give a lot to the country,” he told the audience of IL youth gathered in Nazaré.
“Since the pandemic, the world has been very nervous and we need that more feminine side in leadership. Women manage to be more pragmatic and humane. They have that aspect that would bring great benefits if we put them in charge,” explains Álvaro . Beleza now to the DN.
