A platform to demand the departure of José Gonzales. Twenty elected officials from Nupes demand the resignation of this RN deputy from the position of vice-president of the France-Algeria friendship group that he has held for a few weeks.
His appointment is “an insult to the victims of the Organization of the Secret Army (OAS), of the Algerian war and, more broadly, of French colonialism”, it can be read in the columns of the World.
A speech that had shocked the Nupes
At the end of June, for the first session of the National Assembly, José Gonzales, who is the dean of the national assemblyhad expressed his excitement on the podium at the idea of “his dead friends” in Algeria. This pied-noir, born in Oran in 1942, had also explained, with a broken voice, that he was excited to “see all the deputies united side by side”, as a “symbol of French unity”.
“I left part of my France there”, the nonagenarian had also judged on the podium, evoking his childhood, before assuring the BFMTV microphone “not knowing” if the OAS he had committed crimes during the Algerian war. His speech had caused a clamor in the benches on the left.
“When José González talks about this issue as a parliamentarian, to deny the atrocities committed by the OAS, it is not ignorance. It is a very serious political offense”, the elected officials of the Nupes assure again.
The tortuous history of the RN with French Algeria
And point out the “deep foundations of the National Association: an identity, nationalist party, which includes fascists and denialists in its ranks.”
The OAS is now considered by historians specializing in the Algerian war as a terrorist organization, the author of attacks that left hundreds dead in Algeria and several dozen in mainland France. Among the targets: the office of the Vice President of the Senate or the house of André Malraux, then Minister of Culture. formed by this conflict.

“Is it then that colonial past that José Gonzales and the RN intend to defend with tears of nostalgia in their eyes, when the delegation of the France-Algeria friendship group is invited, as usual, to Algiers?”, the signatories still wonder from the platform.
An appointment seen as a brake “on Franco-Algerian relations”
Before “demanding his resignation” from this position that “would put a brake on the development of Franco-Algerian relations freed from the weight of French historical abuses.”
The friendship groups aim to “weave links between French and foreign parliamentarians” and “are also actors in France’s foreign policy and instruments of the international influence of the National Assembly”, recalls the administration of the Palais Bourbon. Without much power, they nevertheless have a symbolic value.
Among the signatories, we have the former Macronist Aurélien Taché, now an environmentalist deputy, the presidency of the EELV group in the National Assembly Cyrielle Chatelain, the communist Elsa Faucillon or even Paul Vannier, a rising figure from La France insoumise.
