Portuguese voted for PS government evaluation after four years, says Brilhante Dias

The socialist parliamentary leader said on Thursday that the PS is looking carefully at the polls, but emphasized that the Portuguese voted last year for a government that will be evaluated after four years.

This position was put forward by Eurico Brilhante Dias at the end of the weekly meeting of the socialist bank, after being questioned about the poll released by TVI/CNN-Portugal on Wednesday showing the PSD ahead of the PS.

“The PS and its parliamentary faction pay close attention to all information and also to the polls, but there is one point that we must underline. Evaluate ourselves after four years,” replied Eurico Brilhante Dias.

In front of journalists, the PS parliamentary leader recalled that a week before the parliamentary elections on January 30, 2022, a poll was also released that gave the PSD an edge over the PS.

This “was less than seven years ago. The PSD was already ahead of the PS in polls until we achieved an absolute majority” in last year’s snap parliamentary elections, he stressed.

Eurico Brilhante Dias later rejected the prospect of a political crisis in Portugal, pointing out that recently, on January 5, a motion of censure against the government tabled by the Liberal Initiative was rejected.

“The Portuguese voted on January 30 [de 2022] wanting stability, the PS in government, and the Prime Minister, António Costa, knowing that after four years, of course, in democracy, “that choice will be evaluated in elections,” he said.

Still in the sense of putting the polls into perspective, Eurico Brilhante Dias remembered the time when he was part of the National Secretariat of the PS led by António José Seguro (2011/2014), when the socialists opposed the first PSD/CDS were -PP government led by Pedro Passos Coelho.

“We were ahead in the polls for years until we had an election [em outubro de 2015]. The polls have to be looked at closely, but what the Portuguese said in the polls is that they want the PS in government for four years,” he affirmed.

The parliamentary leader of the PS also faced the following statement from PSD president Luís Montenegro on Wednesday: “The day we conclude that the government cannot move on, we are not going to run to see who arrives first. , no let’s go with diversions Let’s go to the president of the republic to say for more A plus B plus C why the political and economic reality of the country requires the break of the legislature, when that day comes, will we take responsibility”.

Eurico Brilhante Dias responded to this statement with a short remark: “Any day; any day, that’s what he [Luís Montenegro] said”.
