Pension reform: Nupes presented nearly 6,000 amendments in the Assembly

Three days before the consideration of the pension bill in committee, the deputies presented 6938 amendments. La France insoumise is the one that presented the most with an objective: “to force the government to explain its text”. The RN is much more discreet.

The parliamentary battle is on. The deputies of the social affairs commission will study the pension reform on Monday and, therefore, can begin to modify the text through amendments.

6,938 amendments were filed, according to information from BFMTV. Although not all of them must be finally examined – this is the case, for example, of the amendments that have no direct relationship with the bill and are called “legislative clauses” – the vast majority must be discussed.

“Forcing the government to give explanations”

Not surprisingly, it is the Nupes who most want to modify the reform with 86% of the amendments presented. La France insoumise is in the lead with 48% of the deposits, followed by ecologists and communists.

If LFI had initially promised a battle of amendments – the movement had presented 40,000 in 2020 on the reform of pensions by points – the strategy has now changed.

“Last time, we made the decision to want to slow down the debates to give people time to mobilize. This time, we want to force the government to explain each article of its bill,” explains rebel deputy Hadrien Clouet.

Focus on 3 key points

With one limitation: that of a relatively short time for the debate, limited to 20 days in the National Assembly by the government, framed in article 47.1 of the Constitution. Therefore, it is no longer a question of presenting the so-called “comma” amendments. Be understood: identical amendments in which only one point or word is changed to slow down the debates.

These reforms “will give the necessary time to demonstrate the immense social setback that this reform imposes,” adds LFI in a statement.

With a bill comprising 20 articles, the National Assembly group has also chosen to focus on 3 key issues: leaving at 64, the question of hard work and increasing duration faster than usual. expected during the Touraine reform in 2013.

“The parliamentary fight is necessary, and it will be fought, but it is not here where we will make the government bend”, qualifies the communist deputy Sébastien Jumel, whose party presented 272 amendments.

A discreet RN

The National Association, for its part, opted for a completely different strategy by presenting only 75 amendments, or less than one per deputy. If Marine Le Pen denounced this Thursday morning before the microphone of BFMTV “a useless, brutal and ineffective reform”, she instead counts on Les Républicains, very divided, to break the government.

The parliamentary right has presented 617 amendments. If the tenors of the party such as its boss Éric Ciotti or the leader of the deputies Alain Marleix will vote in favor of the reform, at least a third of the elected LR still doubts, vote against or abstain.

The government will need about forty votes in addition to the presidential majority to aspire to have its text approved.
