Although a new day of mobilization is scheduled for next Tuesday, the opposition to the pension reform intensifies with the passing of the weeks. On January 11, 59% of the French were against the government text according to a poll by Elabe for BFMTV. A week later, this rejection increased to 66% of respondents, before finally rising to 72% on Wednesday.
The executive is increasingly under pressure. However, according to Raymond Soubie, former social adviser to Nicolas Sarkozy who was invited to BFMTV on Thursday, Emmanuel Macron must, “in his own interest, hold on.”
“A question of credibility”
“Otherwise, he’s almost dead politically,” said the man who notably organized the implementation of pension reform under Nicolas Sarkozy.
“What are the reforms in which, in addition to the end of life, is he involved?” he wonders. “The pension reform, he recalled it many times, he talked about it during the presidential campaign, he even tried another reform in 2019,” continues Raymond Soubie.
“If he backs down, he is dead: he no longer has any authority, he will no longer be able to pass a text. It is a question of credibility ”, he concludes.
