“Professor André Ventura has been elected with 98.3% of the vote,” the director announced, without giving details of the number of votes for, against and abstentions among the more than 600 deputies.
Ventura was the only candidate for leadership. It is now for a period of three years.
André Ventura has been to the polls several times and has always achieved results above 90%.
The first time he presented for votes, at the party’s founding convention, in June 2019, he had 94% of the vote.
He resigned in April 2020, having been re-elected in direct elections in September of that year with a result of 99.1%.
On March 6, 2021, the party returned to elect Ventura in new direct elections, with 97.3%, after stepping down for failing to meet its targets in the January 24 presidential election, in which he was the third most voted. from former PS MEP Ana Gomes and forcing the head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, into a second round.
André Ventura was only challenged in the November 2021 direct elections. In these direct elections, he obtained 94.78% of the vote, while his opponent, businessman Carlos Natal, obtained 5.22%.
Now he has been re-elected by convention, as enshrined in the 2019 statutes, which Chega decided to re-adopt after the Constitutional Court rejected the most recent statutes.
23 motions approved
The National Convention of Chega passed 23 thematic motions, pointing to the need to repopulate the interior, eradicate poverty or support local party structures.
The motions, approved early tonight by the majority of the 503 congressmen who took part in the vote, at the V National Convention of Chega, which runs until Sunday at the National Center for Agricultural Exhibitions and Markets (CNEMA), in Santarém, must be carried out “within a reasonable time”, the election and operating rules of the assembly are established.
Two of the motions were passed with only one abstention and no votes against, the motion addressing the “key political concerns” of the party’s youth, to serve “as a basis for the proposals to be put forward in the future defended and presented”. and the one who speaks of “unite the party in the fight against socialism”.
The motion “SOS Interior: Projecto D. Sancho I de Repopulation of the Interior” tabled by the Viseu district points to an “unjustified” interior, with a lack of services, in education or health, while the “Poverty Eliminate: Eliminate Portugal – Motion for Portuguese Families” proposes spending 5% of GDP on pro-family policies or the creation of “an emergency fund for families considering resorting to abortion for economic reasons”.
The district of Viana do Castelo, on the other hand, filed a motion on “Lithium – the poisoned gift of wealth creation”, requesting that “revert all current concessions approved by the PS government, even if they entail costs”. taking into account the damage that “will cause in the short and medium/long term”, and that “the decision-makers concerned may be penalized, if the said very serious damage is confirmed in the long term, for the population and for the environment”.
One of the motions tabled by the district of Santarém defends the existence of a “National Water Network”, similar to the electricity grid, which allows the “transfer of water from the north, where it is abundant, to the south, where it is scarce, via the designated waterway” connecting Douro – Tagus – Guadiana – Algarve, with an estimated cost of 12,000 million euros, to be implemented over a period of 20 to 50 years.
Among the 24 motions tabled were requests for support for the party’s local structures, the proposal to establish a “Enough School” for training militants, or an office for training mayors, with the proposal of the petitioner withdrew the motion calling for the creation of a code of conduct for social networks, which would include the expulsion of those who create pages without the approval of Chega’s structures, to “eradicate” discussions from the “internal forum” and “improve the image of the party”.
The “service count for retirement of volunteer firefighters – recognition of the career of volunteer firefighters” was the subject of the motion presented by the political committees of Évora, Coimbra and Beja, while others proposed support and incentives for acquiring housing and policies in the field of tourism.
Until Sunday in Santarém, Chega will hold its V National Convention, marked after the rejection of the statutes by the Constitutional Court.
The party decided to return to its original 2019 statutes and amend the bodies, rather than amending them again this weekend.
