The socialist parliamentary leader this Monday challenged the president of the PSD to focus on creating an alternative to the PS, in response to Luís Montenegro’s admitted possibility of asking for early elections after the European elections.
“I don’t remember Luís Montenegro having that opinion when the Socialist Party won the elections [europeias] in 2014. We have to be consistent. (…) In 2013, [o PSD] I had already had a very serious political crisis with an irrevocable resignation – and I don’t remember Dr. Luís Montenegro asked for the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic and asked the [à data] President of the Republic, Cavaco Silva, elections”declared Eurico Brilhante Dias when faced with a scenario of anticipation from the legislators after a poor result of the PS in the 2024 Europeans.
Montenegro warned that when it understands it’s time to suspend the legislature, it will appeal to the president of the republic, though it believes this is still “the time” for António Costa.
“The PPD-PSD should focus on what matters most: be an alternative to the PS and present an alternative program to the PS in 2026. Because it is in democracy, in the construction of alternatives, that the democratic game is played”said.
According to Eurico Brilhante Dias, “the worst that could happen was that the PS program, this government’s program, had no alternative”. “And what we clearly see at the moment is that there is no alternative program to the PS”to maintain.
Confronted by journalists with the weakened image of the executive after “the affairs and affairs” that led to several departures, the chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the PS defended that “all governments must solve problems, both in their organic and in their organisation. , whether they have an absolute majority or not”.
“When we look at things, there are facts about, three, I don’t know if four, that have a different political context and they were overcome. The Portuguese know that the essence of politics is not to solve the problems of the structure of the government. politics is to solve the problems of your life”he noted, indicating that some members of the government left because of illness, others of their own free will.
Given that there is a lot of work ahead, such as the decent work agenda, which needs to be finalized in the Assembly of the Republic, the Socialist deputy stressed that the Portuguese showed unequivocally that they trusted António Costa and the PS.
“We have a mandate, a program to fulfill until 2026, this sign of stability that I am giving is a response to the Portuguese people’s desire for stability. That is what we must focus on”he repeated.
The socialist government with an absolute majority resulting from the last parliamentary elections has registered four reshuffles so far after ten months in office, with 12 dismissals and the entry of 14 new governors.
The XXIIIrd Constitutional Government was sworn in by the President of the Republic on March 30, 2022, two (long) months after the electoral triumph of the PS with an absolute majority due to the rerun of elections in the European constituency.
