The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, admitted this Tuesday that “in the coming days” he has asked the Constitutional Court for a preventive inspection of the law on professional orders.
“I think it’s good that there is security and certainty for the Portuguese,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa justified to journalists about the bill approved last year.
In December 2022, Parliament approved the final text of the bill on professional associations, which, among other things, amends the conditions for access to the profession (lawyer, accountant or doctor), introduces paid professional internships and creates an external entity to guide professionals .
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa preferred not to comment on Monday’s decision by the TC that reaffirmed the unconstitutionality of some rules of the diploma decriminalizing medically assisted death.
However, he considered that the Constitutional Court “has made a great effort to facilitate the task of the Assembly of the Republic, because it somehow explains the way forward”. “Let’s wait and see,” he said.
“On the two occasions when it was called upon to intervene, the Constitutional Court did not limit itself to deeming some points of the diploma unconstitutional, but opened avenues for a solution. It did so again,” emphasized the president of the republic.
