The Assembly of the Republic (AR) has recommended that the government use Beja airport “in its various dimensions and possibilities” to promote the “settlement” of the population and industry in this Alentejo district.
The recommendation was published this Thursday in Diário da República, after the final text of the draft resolution presented by the Committee on Economy, Public Works, Planning and Housing, based on a PCP project, was approved on January 26.
On that occasion, the document received favorable votes from the benches of the PS, Chega, Iniciativa Liberal, PCP and Bloco de Esquerda and the sole delegates of PAN and Livre, with the PSD opting to abstain.
The draft resolution, consulted by the Lusa agency, recommends that the government “value Beja Airport within the scope of the national airport system and take advantage of all its resources and potential”because it is “a promoter of the settlement of population and industry in the region”.
One of the AR’s recommendations is to create an “intermodality of services and transport, combining road, rail and air services”.
To this end, the motion for a resolution proposes, in the case of the railways, the modernization and electrification of the entire Alentejo line, “in the connection between Casa Branca-Ourique/Funcheira, including the study of the connection to Beja airport”.
In addition, parliament defended that the construction of Main Route 8 (IP8) should be ensured, “with two lanes and without tolls between Sines and the A2 [Autoestrada do Sul]”.
Still on the IP8, it is recommended to upgrade this road, “in a first phase between Santa Margarida do Sado and Beja and in a second phase between Beja and [Vila Verde de] Stay,” it says.
The government must “improve the integrated strategy of aviation, cargo, parking, maintenance and passengers, as a way to promote the endogenous development of tourism, industry and aviation maintenance and cargo/logistics”is included in the recommendation.
the joint “between the different levels of local, regional and national planning, the use to be given to the airport [de Beja]using all its possibilities and dimensions”is also recommended.
On January 28, it was announced that Beja and Alverca have entered the list of possible sites for the new Lisbon airport, following proposals received by the Independent Technical Commission (CTI), which will analyze them.
At the end of January, the citizens’ platform Yes to Beja International Airport was presented in Lisbon, which defends the infrastructure of the Alentejo as a “sustainable solution” for the country and as a “complement to Lisbon airport”.
