The National Assembly rejects with one vote the extension of meals to 1 euro for all students

Meals for one euro in university restaurants are currently reserved for scholarship holders and precarious students. The socialist deputies’ bill was rejected by one vote.

A person. The National Assembly rejected this Thursday with extreme precision a text by the Socialist deputies that proposed access to meals for one euro for all students, a price today reserved for scholarship holders and precarious workers.

The fate of this bill, examined at first reading, was decided by a vote (183 “in favor”, 184 “against”), after the presidential camp, hostile to this measure, defeated in extremis the withdrawal of troops for the final vote. Seven LR deputies also voted against (four abstained). Currently, access to one-euro meals is reserved in university restaurants for scholarship students or students in a precarious situation.

“I am disappointed, except for one vote, the universal one-euro meal was enshrined in law, but it is above all the students who will be disappointed today,” said Socialist MP Fatiha Keloua-Hachi, who brought this text as part of a day reserved for your group.

“Renaissance and LR deputies rejected our proposal for (…) a one-euro meal for all students. So that all students can eat their fill. The fight continues,” the group’s president Boris reacted in a tweet. Vallaud.

The text, supported by the entire left, had also received the support of the deputies of the National Group. The first victorious votes on amendments hinted at a possible socialist victory, before the presidential camp mobilized the deputies for the final vote. Macronista deputies opposed a measure considered “unfair”, insisting that it would also have benefited students from wealthy backgrounds.

A “demagogic” measure for the majority

Deputy Anne Brugnera (Renaissance) set a “demagogic” measure.

“Thanks to you, the children of your friend Bernard Arnault will be able to go to the Crous and pay only one euro,” added his colleague Sylvain Maillard.

Alexandre Portier (LR), for his part, advocated that access to the price of 1 euro be conditional on the commitment to “work two hours a week at the service of a local community”.

The Minister of Higher Education, Sylvie Retailleau, declared herself against the measure, the cost of which she estimated at at least “90 million euros.” She highlighted the existence of social rates for meals for “students in difficulty.”

The 1 euro meal was temporarily extended to all students in 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic.
