Three MPs from the PS parliament questioned the Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba, whether he had taken any measures to ensure the privacy of Netflix users, given the new rules on account sharing.
In a Thursday question and initially reported by Jornal de Notícias, Socialist deputies Paulo Araújo questioned Correia, Hugo Carvalho and Hugo Oliveira “what measures are being taken to ensure that Netflix fully complies with the fundamental right to privacy with regard to the privacy of consumers’ private lives”.
The three deputies also question whether any steps have been taken with the National Communications Authority on the matter.
Netflix announced on Wednesday that it has ended out-of-home account sharing in several countries, including Portugal.
As of now, members with the “Standard” or “Premium” plan can “add additional secondary member accounts, for up to two people outside their place of residence,” with an additional monthly cost of $3.99, Netflix announced in a statement.
The delegates focused on the fact that Netflix stated that it will “use the IP address, device ID and account activity to detect where users log into the account”.
This move leaves delegates questioning whether it will comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and even the Constitution.
“As publicly announced by the Netflix company, its claim to preserve, limit, or restrict the privacy of consumers’ private lives is for commercial purposes only, and the company makes no explanation as to how it intends to make this claim. with the full respect of this fundamental right”argue the deputies.
