Costa: “Investments in housing in the PRR will not be able to enter through the main entrance”

António Costa said this Wednesday, regarding the status of the recovery and resilience program (PRR) that the government is making to the president of the republic, that investment in housing “cannot enter through the main door”, but indirectly.

The Prime Minister recalled that the “PRR was born in the midst of a pandemic and when the EU understood that it should not respond to the crisis as it had responded to the previous crisis” is that, “Two years later, the European economy in general and the Portuguese economy in particular has recovered from the impact of covid and is doing better than in 2019”.

“We have 107 thousand more jobs than in 2019. In 2021 we had lower growth than other states less dependent on tourism, but in 2022 we had one of the highest growth rates at European level. Investments are needed to strengthen the EU and strengthening the resilience of society and economy”continued the leader of the government.

“The recovery part has already been achieved, now the country has to be rebuilt in a logic of the future. The PRR differs from using other community funds because the government is obliged to meet targets and milestones according to a time frame approved by the EU .PRR is measured by meeting targets and milestones agreed with the EU.The PRR has an economic impact that exceeds the resources allocated. Each euro of the PRR has an impact of 5.3 euros on the GDP”he added, before referring to areas where substantial investments will be made, such as green hydrogen.

In an introductory note, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa emphasized the “institutional and strategic solidarity” surrounding the PRR, which he sees as a “very important opportunity for the years to come”.

“We are all together, all sovereign bodies, all Portuguese people, around the recovery and resilience plan and around what it means as a very important opportunity for our country this year and in the years to come,” said the President of the República, on the opening of the session, in the old Picadeiro Real, next to the Palace of Belém, in Lisbon.

In a brief statement at the beginning of the presentation, the Head of State thanked the Prime Minister for this second presentation on the PRR, now that it is “in full progress”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stressed that this issue is “of national importance”. “The Presidium of the Republic listens carefully and then, if necessary, asks questions, which will be answered by the board,” said the President.
