A tweet that publicly exposes the dissensions within the Nupes. Following the withdrawal by the communist deputies of all their amendments before article 7, Jean-Luc Mélenchon judged this withdrawal as “incomprehensible”.
“Why rush? (…) I can’t wait to take a beating?” asked the founder of La France insoumise on his Twitter account.
2 opposing strategies
The Socialists, for their part, indicated that they had withdrawn “100% of their amendments” before article 7. With one objective: to be able to discuss it when this article is the most emblematic, delaying the retirement age.
After 7 sessions, the deputies are in article 3 of a bill that has 20. The debates must end this Friday at midnight, in accordance with the will of the executive that has initiated a procedure that restricts the times of debate to 10 days in the hemicycle.
Between the lines, these are 2 opposing strategies: the one on the one hand that consists of slowing down the debates, lamenting that the government has chosen a short time for the debate, accusing it of “denial of democracy.” On the other, the hope that a vote on article 7 will be rejected, which allows the left to argue in favor of a vote against and push the Executive to back down.
Problem: if the deputies approved the reduction of the retirement age to 64 years, the government could boast of a victory. As for the effect on social mobilization, it is very uncertain: could this demobilize the protesters or, on the contrary, push them to raise their voices?
Questions to LFI
Proof that the rebels themselves are hesitating: according to several MPs, an internal vote on Thursday night narrowly rejected abandoning the amendments.
In the ranks of the communists we assume the strategy. “Yes, let’s go quickly to article 7. The employees, the French are looking at us. Let everyone withdraw their amendments ”, launched the number 1 of the PCF on his Twitter account.
A demand from the union front
The general secretary of the CFDT, Laurent Berger, and his counterpart from the CGT, Philippe Martinez, have wanted article 7, which refers to the measurement of age, to be debated and voted on.
Aurore Bergé, the president of the Renaissance group in the Assembly, did not hesitate to exploit their differences. “Jean-Luc Mélenchon has just accused his own partners of participating in the game of democracy since now (according to him) it is a problem to withdraw the amendments so that we can vote,” the elected official des Yvelines launched in front of journalists
The septuagenarian insisted and signed at a meeting a few hours later in Montpellier, denouncing “a serious mistake on the part of the communists.”
Response from Manuel Bompard, the new LFI coordinator in the chamber who preferred to move the debates to the question of tempo. “If it really is intended that all the articles be debated, there is an extremely simple solution, prolong the debates,” launched the rebel.
For several days, LFI deputies have been asking for the bill’s examination to be extended beyond Friday night. The government has so far rejected this proposal.
