PSD President Luís Montenegro this Friday believed that territorial cohesion is “a national priority” and that low-density areas “should be a priority for public policy”.
“Territorial cohesion, let’s never lose sight of this, is in fact a national priority, because it is at the heart of what matters most in a society: justice, equal opportunities”said Luis Montenegro.
The national leader of the PSD spoke in Pinhel, in the Guarda district, inland, in the speech he gave at the opening of the 28th Traditions and Economic Activities Fair, promoted by the city council to attract visitors and promote local products at the end of the carnival weekend.
“If there is no cohesion between the different areas, people don’t all have the same opportunities. In the Portuguese case, it means having first, second and third class Portuguese, because some have access to better schools, others have access to better health response, others have access to better jobs, others have access to more cultural, sporting and leisure dynamics”said Montenegro, after the mayor of Pinhel, Rui Ventura (PSD), also raised the issue of territorial cohesion in his speech.
The PSD president also believed that low-density areas “they must be a priority of public policy”.
“But it’s not just thinking about the people who live here [em Pinhel] or who live here. This also includes people who are concentrated in large urban centers and on the coast, because precisely because of that concentration, these people have also lost a lot of quality of life.”he said.
According to Luis Montenegro, “Territorial cohesion is just as important for people living in low-density areas as it is for people living in larger conurbations.”
“We have to think effectively about how to give everyone the same opportunities. And there’s no question that one of the best ways is not to be like Rui.” [Ventura] I just said here, only carriers of complaints about political power, about the government of the republic. There are, and many. He has completely forgotten about these regions, he has raised expectations that he later does not live up to, he has promised many investments that later only remain on paper.”he declared.
In his speech, Montenegro also talked about immigration and emigration, referring to Pinhel is “a territory where it is worth living and a territory where it is worth living”.
“We will open our arms and our hearts to those who have left here to return here, to those who are not from here and can settle here and to those who come from abroad to help us with their ability, with their efforts, build a more prosperous and fairer Portugal”he said.
And ended: “During these days, many have misrepresented several of our positions [sobre o tema da imigração]but we are one of those who understand that Portugal has a future for many who are looking for an opportunity in other regions”.
“But we want them to come and be treated with dignity. We want them to come and be as they are here in Pinhel, integrated with their families, schools and community dynamics”he concluded.
The Pinhel City Council is promoting this weekend the 28th Fair of Traditions and Economic Activities, with the participation of about 160 exhibitors, to attract visitors and promote local products.
