Montenegro accuses the government of “following” the PSD and defends a plan to welcome immigrants

PSD President Luís Montenegro accused the government this Monday of “imitating” the social democrats, namely in the field of immigration, and of defending the need for a “plan for the reception and integration of immigrants”.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that the government continues to drag behind the PSD. We need to take this issue seriously with a plan to welcome and integrate immigrants and a proactive prime minister who is able to govern with an eye to the future and not just tomorrow”, defended Montenegro, on his official account on the social network Twitter.

In the message, the Chairman of the Social Democrats shares the news released this weekend regarding the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), which took place in Addis Ababa, in which the Prime Minister, António Costa, supported the proposal of the President of the European Council for a pact between Europe and Africa that regulates migration flows and punishes criminal groups that smuggle people but also by promoting legal migration channels.

“The neighborhood lives together and this coexistence must be a properly regulated coexistence and must not be an opportunity for organized crime and a threat to the life of anyone who wants to find new opportunities in life on the other side of the Mediterranean” , António Costa told Lusa, on the sidelines of this summit in which he participated as an observer, the only non-African official present.

At the same time, it is necessary to define legal migration channels, the prime minister insisted.

“We need to find a solution here that is positive for everyone, because Europe undoubtedly needs more human resources” and “Africa has an abundance of human resources”, considered the head of the Portuguese government.

But “on the other hand, Europe also needs to find ways to create new jobs on the African continent, so that we don’t simply have a loss of human resources on the African continent,” he added.

The topic of immigration has sparked controversy after last week, in relation to the fire in Mouraria that killed two people. immigrants enter Portugal without an employment contract.

The leader of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, said the country should receive immigrants “in a regulated manner” and “scour the world” for communities that could better relate to the Portuguese.

Montenegro will meet the Brazilian immigrant community in Braga on Tuesday, where it will meet with the UAI Association – Union, Support and Integration.
