Enough is asking the housing minister to be heard in parliament

Chega this Monday asked that the housing minister be heard in parliament to explain to deputies the measures presented by the government on Thursday and announced its own package on the matter.

Speaking at a press conference at the party’s national headquarters, in Lisbon, the president of Chega indicated that he had submitted a request to parliament to hear the Minister of Housing, Marina Gonçalves, on an urgent basis in the parliamentary committee on economics. If rejected by the PS, André Ventura said the party will proceed to a potestative hearing (compulsory) to force the minister to go to the Assembly of the Republic.

Chega wants Marina Gonçalves to explain to parliament “given the seriousness” of the measures proposed by the government and “the impact indicated by owners, tenants and investors that they could have on the market, on confidence and on the economic environment of the country in general”.

André Ventura also presented the package of measures proposed by Chega to journalists, called “Housing with confidence”.

Chega proposes 10 measures, including exemption from payment of IMT, IMI and stamp duty for those who buy their own house up to 250 thousand euros, reduction of income tax to 5% in the case of long-term contracts and 10% for the rest, tax benefits for those who renovation of dilapidated buildings or the reduction of VAT on civil construction.

The party also wants direct support for families who have seen their effort rate “rise significantly” due to the rise in interest rates, subsidized credit for young people, with a state guarantee for five years, limiting the number of rents that can be claimed at the start of new lease agreements, an inventory of available public housing and sanctions for misuse of public housing.

These proposals will be presented “on Thursday” to the Assembly of the Republic, said André Ventura, who said he hoped they could be discussed on the same day as the government’s measures.

Chega’s leader estimated that the costs of the measures proposed by the party are “in the order of 750 million euros”.

Ventura also announced that the party will introduce a resolution in parliament “for the immediate rejection” of the government’s proposals contained in the “More Housing Programme” and admitted to having “informal contacts” with other parties with a view to requesting an inspection of their constitutionality before the Constitutional Court.

The leader of Chega also appealed to the President of the Republic not to “enable any measure to come into force without the scrutiny of the Constitutional Court” and to politically veto some of them, admitting that he put Marcelo Rebelo the Sousa had asked for an audience.
