The Renaissance group in the National Assembly does not want former deputy M’jid El Guerrab, convicted of acts of violence, to sit in their seats if he is elected in partial legislative elections in April, warned one of its spokesmen, deputy Prisca Thévenot, on Sunday.
M’jid El-Guerrab made headlines in August 2017. During an altercation, he hit a socialist leader, Boris Faure, with a motorcycle helmet. These facts had earned him a sentence of one year in prison and two years of disqualification, which he appealed.
Today he announced his intention to run for his former seat in the 9th constituency of French residents abroad, which includes the Maghreb and West Africa.
“Someone who has been recognized for acts of violence does not have to sit with us,” Prisca Thévenot said during the Sunday inpolicy program on France 3.
An agreement reached with his victim to “turn the page”
He added that this was the position of the Renaissance group in the National Assembly and of its president, Aurore Bergé. He also clarified that he did not want M’jid El Guerrab to be able to claim the Macronista party label during this election scheduled for April 2 and 16.
This partial follows the invalidation of the election of Karim Ben Cheikh, representative of Nupes.
During the vote last June, El Guerrab had given up running for his own succession after the macronistas inverted Elisabeth Moreno, delegate minister for Gender Equality, finally defeated in the second round with 45.93% of the vote.
Following his criminal conviction, M’jid El Guerrab reached a civil settlement agreement with his victim in October 2022, with the aim of “turning the page”.
