The war in Ukraine and the action of the Portuguese contingent in the Detached National Forces on the eastern border of the Atlantic Alliance are on the agenda of the meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSDN), scheduled for Friday, March 3.
According to a statement from the Presidency of the Republic, the meeting will take place via videoconference with the President of the Republic, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, at Belém Palace.
Belém’s note does not mention the agenda, but the DN knows that a situation report will be made on the war in Ukraine and on the activities of the FND in that area.
The CSDN is the consultative body for matters pertaining to national defense and the organization, operation and discipline of the armed forces and is chaired by the President of the Republic.
This Council usually meets every three months and on exceptional occasions when convened by the President of the Republic, on his initiative or at the request of the Prime Minister.
According to the National Defense Act, the CSDN consists of: Prime Minister; Ministers of State, if applicable; Minister of National Defence, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of the Interior and Minister of Finance; ministers responsible for industry, energy, transport and communications; Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces; Representatives of the Republic for the Autonomous Regions; Presidents of the Governments of the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira; chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Assembly of the Republic; Chiefs of Staff of the Navy, Army, and Air Force; Two members of the Assembly of the Republic;
Last December, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa visited the National Detachment Force (FND), in Romania, the army on a mission under the Enhanced Vigilance Activity, with a Company of Shooters, and those under bilateral relations , the Special Operations Land Task Unit.
In addition to the contingent in Romania, consisting of 221 soldiers from the three branches of a sniper company under the Tailored Forward Presence, which, after the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, went to reinforce the defense of NATO’s eastern border by Russia, are also in Lithuania , 146 Marines.
