Emmanuel Macron affirms that “almost 70 attacks” have been frustrated “in the last ten years”, during a tribute ceremony organized this Saturday at the Hôtel national des Invalides on the occasion of the national and European newspaper dedicated to the victims of terrorism.
“Prevent (the inconceivable) from happening”
“The State is there to prevent (the inconceivable) from happening. In the last ten years, close to 70 attacks have been thwarted thanks to the action of the services,” he said.
He recalled, before associations of victims and relatives of victims of terrorism, the actions of the State against terrorism since his arrival at the head of the country. He especially highlighted the creation of the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office in 2019.
In addition to paying tribute to the victims, “this day is also the day that should allow us to continue mobilizing everything that allows us to prevent terrorism,” he said.
Key trials in 2022
Emmanuel Macron also praised the work done by the judiciary in recent years, culminating in the Nice and Bataclan bombing trials last year.
“When the inconceivable has happened, there is justice to act, to say the law,” he said.
These trials are synonymous with everything “that the ideologues of hate execrate”, he considered, namely “the rule of law, the appeasement by force of our laws”, and have allowed “the outbreak of the necessary voice” of the victims. He also indicated that 23 trials for acts of terrorism are still pending.
A future museum of terrorism
The Head of State has also confirmed the creation of a terrorism memorial museum to be opened “in the first half of 2027” in Suresnes, in the Hauts-de-Seine. “I had made this commitment before you, it will be fulfilled,” he assured.
This place of memory must also be a “place of education, of surveillance”, assures the President of the Republic.
“We will remember the victims, we will oppose reason and knowledge to chaos,” he still maintains.
