Azores head of government shakes mind of “instability”

José Manuel Bolieiro (PSD), president of the regional government of the Azores, continues to push heavily on the argument of stability to discourage the possibility of a political crisis in the archipelago. The scenario took shape a few days ago, after the Liberal Initiative broke with the agreement that linked this party to the PSD and made governance viable.

Speaking to journalists in Ponta Delgada, at the regional government’s headquarters, Bolieiro was asked Monday if he believes his government will come to a discussion of the region’s next budget (November). And in his reply, he hinted that he will turn any possible crisis, and the resulting electoral act, into a plebiscite on the idea of stability, which he knows is dear to the voters of the Azores: “Not dependent on me, I can only express my confidence and my to make things work well. Everyone will take their responsibility. Instability factors will be instability factors. The stability factors are my responsibility.”

“Nature destroys, we rebuild. Then there are those who want to promote wear and tear and we, I, rebuild”

Pandemic was worse

Bolieiro acknowledged the “wear and tear” caused by the current situation. But he used that to personify himself as an example of Azores resistance to the weather: “It wears out, wears out. But we’re here to face wear and tear with more motivation and more capacity. This is how the spirit of the Azores is expressed, namely in the relationship with nature. Nature destroys, we rebuild. Then there are those who want to promote wear and tear and we, I, rebuild. He even took the opportunity to devalue his government’s new situation of fragility compared to previous situations he faced: “Our government policies are being implemented, in fact, in record time, in the face of such a difficult context. Not just political, which is probably the least serious. The most serious was the period of pandemic, inflation, war and shortage of raw materials.”

On Wednesday, the IL’s only deputy in the Azores’ parliament, Nuno Barata, broke the parliamentary advocacy deal in support of the Azores regional government, led by Social Democrat José Manuel Bolieiro, and later independent Carlos Furtado, formerly from Chega. broke with that deal. Barata and independent deputy (ex-Chega) Carlos Furtado said they are now analyzing government measures “point by point”. In the Regional Legislative Assembly, which has 57 elected representatives, the regional executive now has the support of only 27 deputies instead of the initial 29.
