Pension reforms: LR deputies tense about possible “returns”

The vote of the Republican deputies on the text of the pension reform is very uncertain. A meeting on Tuesday morning showed that “many have decided to wait until the last moment to decide.”

While uncertainty reigns over the vote of the deputies of Les Républicains on the pension reform on Thursday, the meeting of the LR group in the National Assembly on Tuesday morning did not make it possible to clarify the situation.

During this meeting, the group’s president Olivier Marleix “remembered the freedom to vote for everyone,” a close friend of the group’s presidency informs BFMTV. “On the other hand, he said that it was not acceptable for deputies to sign a motion of censure with people from the left or from Liot.”

Towards a “cross-partisan motion of no confidence”?

On the left, several deputies said that they were working together with the centrist Charles de Courson (Liot) in a “transpartisan motion of no confidence”, to oppose the government, whether or not it takes 49.3 to approve the reform without a vote. The Libertés, Indépendants Outre-mer et Territoires (Liot) group has 20 deputies of various political persuasions.

“We are working on it, it is progressing well. There are discussions both with Liot, some LR, Nupes, we hope that there can be a motion of no confidence between parties in any case, in particular in the event. of 49.3”, thus stated the president of the La France insoumise group, Mathilde Panot, during a press release.

During a press conference, Olivier Marleix estimated on Tuesday that if LR deputies “sign a motion with Liot, they are destined to sit with Liot.”

But “I’m not sure many people care,” he added, assuring that he had not discussed “exclusion” in a group meeting.

“There may be complete reversals of the situation”

According to information from BFMTV, the field of opponents of the text was not well represented during the LR meeting this morning, which had several absentees and several discreet ones.

“A rather anti-text member said she wasn’t sure what she was going to do on Thursday,” said one participant.

“This shows that there can be complete reversals of the situation,” analyzes a close friend of the party’s president, Éric Ciotti. He believes that “the result of the mixed commission will allow us to see things more clearly.”

The joint joint commission will have to bring together on Wednesday seven deputies and seven senators, and as many substitutes, who will try to agree on a common text for the pension reform.

A very uncertain LR vote

In Marleix’s environment, it is said that some thirty elected LR will vote well for the text. Olivier Marleix even assured this Tuesday that “very clearly there is a clear majority within our group to vote for the reform.”

An optimistic estimate compared to the BFMTV tally. According to the BFMTV accountant, 18 deputies out of the 61 that make up the LR group in the Assembly say they are sure to vote for the reform at this time.

“It is that many have decided to wait until the last moment to decide, it is logical”, explains a group strategist.

Another deputy, who nevertheless supports the text, is more pessimistic: “I don’t see how it is going. 30 to 35 deputies for the text? They are completely wrong. It is the car that is facing the wall and continues to think about avoiding it”. he…”

Some at LR wonder if the prospect of a 49-3 isn’t inevitable anyway, to the doubts of some within the majority. But in another meeting of the group, that of Renaissance, the president Aurore Bergé assured him: “There will be a vote. We want a vote. Each one will assume their responsibilities.”
